TESSYS® - Transforaminal Endoscopic Surgical System

Data collected by the University of Greifswald shows that 4.5% of people in Germany between the ages of 30 and 50 suffer from herniated discs, with the condition now being referred to as a "common disease". Male patients are affected twice as much as females, and more than 60 spinal surgeries per 100.000 residents are conducted each year (according to investigations made in 2000 by Kast et. al).

The modern “keyhole-medicine” allows for a particularly gentle operation method without scalpel and anaesthesia. Our TESSYS® platform system allows endoscopic surgeries on the highest technical level.

Minimally invasive, maximally gentle

The TESSYS® method uses the lateral endoscopic access via the foramen for removal of the herniated disc – basically utilising the natural access point. With special reamers and instruments the surgeon progressively and gently dilates the transforaminal access millimeter by millimeter. In doing this, he can remove and cut off tissue directly and under constant camera control through the foramen.

The patients - who are only analgo-sedated - are bedded in the prone or lateral position and are awake and responsive during the entire surgery. Thus they are able to react immediately upon possible nerve contacts. Due to this, a surgery conducted with the TESSYS® method is far more comfortable and gentle for patients than conventional methods – most of them can get up only a few hours after the surgery and leave the hospital the same day.
